Looks cool. But I wouldn't describe it as a "hack". Isn't this exactly the point of HTML5 / Web Sockets.
Take a look at the domain. It's "hack" in the second sense <http://www.eps.mcgill.ca/jargon/jargon.html#hack> - an elegant or clever solution to a problem. :)
Well, yeah, I use "hack" in that sense too. But I don't really see how it applies. BrowserQuest appears to be a straightforward application of a technology (Web Sockets) for its intended purpose.
