OK. I cracked and bought a Nexus 7. Really great deal at that price.

Yeah looks pretty great. Unfortunately I just bought a tablet 6 months ago (Motorola Xoom) so I'd probably be a bit silly to get another one. :/
On the plus side the Xoom is going to get the update to 4.1 along with the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S in the next couple of weeks.
Okay good. Because I keep clicking on the update button and it never has anything.
Do you have Ice Cream sandwich yet? If not, I'd just force the update by putting the correct image on the SD card. The WiFi release came out months ago - even Verizon's branded 3G model got ICS a week or so ago.
O RLY. I'd be scared to try a manual update. Are you suggesting that it might never update my device?
Hmm... So Motorola Australia has been skimping on updates too? Yeah the US WiFi version came out on the 18th of January. Verizon's 3G version took until the 4th of June (that's 6 months later!). I thought it was just Verizon being dog-slow. It's a really terrific update and makes a big improvement.
Sounds like they want to do a simultaneous release of the 3G/WiFi firmware, so hopefully it's should be out very soon:

Otherwise I've seen reports of people using the US firmware without too much fuss.

OK cool. Nice that we have to go on Facebook to receive product updates now :rrr
And more recently... https://www.facebook.com/motorolaaus/posts/434153729951298
So Telstra customers get ICS... and the rest "we're sorry, we won't be able to deliver ICS in Q2 as promised"... THAT. EXCUSE. SUCKS.

PRETTY. LAME.
Wait, I just re-read your original post. When you say "cracked and bought a Nexus 7" do you mean the purchase was under a "you break it you buy it" policy? :p
Not quite. Didn't make it to Google IO this year, so had to actually buy one! Can you believe that!
What, you got to go to IO last year? Awesome. (No I just meant parsing your sentence, it could be read as "I cracked [a Nexus 7] and bought [it]" as opposed to "I cracked [myself] and bought a Nexus 7.")
Sadly never been to any. Maybe next year. :)
(You could also parse my last post as "[I] Didn't make it to Google IO this year, so had to actually buy one [a Google conference]!")

Just made an ambiguous sentence. Phone's fine, the only thing that's hurt is my wallet from spontaneous purchases.

But it's only 7" - that seems too big for a phone and too small for a tablet to me.
I'll be interested to hear how it works out for you and for what uses it works best. Is it good for reading documents (e.g. in meetings), for reading 'the paper' (be it The Age or some other news service)... hmm, what else?

+Michael Poloni I think it should be about the same size as my Nook classic eReader. Being about the size of a paperback and quite light is the advantage that you can carry it around. I also hope it's big enough to make browsing and typing on it acceptable (I find my phone is too small for it to be enjoyable).
