Pretty amazing how much variety there is in energy intake for a single meal. Pretty scary to see a day's energy (2000 kcal = 8374 kJ) in a single dish.
I think it both ends up being portion sizes and content. For example, while in Japan 500-700 kcal would get you a miso soup, small rice bowl, a plate and a small dessert. The rice surprisingly was often the big calorie dish (about 200 kcal on its own).
